Why a fixed schedule doesn't work for everyone
Nail growth rate varies by dog — size, activity level, and surface all play a role. A dog that runs regularly on pavement or trail naturally wears its nails down faster than a dog that's mostly on grass or carpet, so a generic "every 4 weeks" rule ends up being too frequent for some dogs and not frequent enough for others.
What to actually check for
- The click test. Stand your dog on a hard, flat floor. If you hear clicking as they walk, the nails are touching down before the paw pad does — that's the clearest sign they're overdue.
- The angle at rest. When your dog is standing normally, the nails shouldn't be touching the ground at all in a relaxed stance. If they visibly rest on the floor, they're too long.
- Behavior changes. Long nails change how a dog's foot strikes the ground, which can eventually affect posture and gait — a dog that seems to be favoring a certain stance or slipping more than usual on hard floors is worth a closer look.

Most dogs land somewhere between every 3 and 4 weeks, but treat that as a starting assumption to check against the click test, not a fixed rule. Active, trail-running dogs may go longer between trims; less active or indoor dogs often need it more often.
